LINGLONG PORCELAIN | 玲珑瓷

Linglong porcelain, also known as "rice grain porcelain," is a rare Chinese ceramic known for its glowing, translucent patterns. These are created by carving tiny holes into the porcelain body and filling them with glaze.
Developed from traditional carving methods, linglong porcelain required exceptional skill and repeated glazing. It was made exclusively for the imperial court, but even then, production was limited, making original pieces extremely rare today, even in museums.
The craft matured during the Ming dynasty (14th–17th centuries) and reached its peak in the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty (18th century). Its legacy lives on in global porcelain styles, such as Finland’s riisiposliini and Japan’s Hotarude (蛍手).
With its refined technique, imperial origins, and extraordinary rarity, Linglong porcelain remains one of China’s most treasured ceramic arts.

Design Story
"
Our collaboration with ROYOKO began in 2019, aiming to reveal Linglong porcelain’s delicate beauty through light.
At studioiiid, design stems from our curiosity about environment and human behavior. The Fu Lamp was inspired by ceramic kiln practices—artisans use unfired clay hemispheres to shape perfect cup rims, a geometric harmony that shaped our design.
The four-year journey faced pauses and challenges, as ceramic production limitations required constant tweaks. Meanwhile, China’s lighting market grew, embracing traditional craft.
Through ongoing collaboration, we balanced craftsmanship with market needs, bringing Linglong porcelain’s heritage into everyday life at an accessible price—a modern revival of an ancient art.
